Terms of Use
The short version
Use the puzzles. Print them, hand them out, do them in a classroom or a care home. Do not republish them as your own product and do not strip the source line off the quotations. If you buy a subscription, Apple handles the money and you cancel it through Apple. We provide the puzzles as they are and cannot promise the internet will never break.
1. Agreeing to these terms
By using the website or the app you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use them. Nothing here takes away a right you have under the consumer law of the country you live in.
2. What the service is
Cryptogram Press publishes a daily cryptogram puzzle, an archive of past puzzles, printable puzzle sheets, solving guides and reference material on this website, and an iPhone app that carries the same daily puzzle with additional features. Today's puzzle and the archive on the website are free to use and require no account.
3. What you may do with the puzzles
We want these used. You may, without asking us:
- Solve the puzzles, on screen or on paper.
- Print the printable sheets and hand them out — to a class, a reading group, a senior centre, a family, a waiting room.
- Quote a short extract from our guides with a link back to the page it came from.
You may not, without our written permission:
- Republish our puzzles, our answers or our written material as your own, or as part of a product you sell.
- Remove the source line from a quotation, or present our material without attribution.
- Copy the site or its content systematically, whether by hand or by automated means, in order to build a competing collection.
- Charge anyone for access to our free material.
If you want to do something not covered here — a newsletter, a book, a commercial product, a charity fundraiser — write and ask. The answer is often yes.
4. Ownership
The quotations we publish are in the public domain and belong to no one. Everything we add to them is ours: the puzzle construction, the ciphers, the difficulty scoring, the archive, the guides, the page designs, the software and the name Cryptogram Press.
4.1 Other people's puzzles
Cryptoquote and Cryptoquip are features of King Features Syndicate. Celebrity Cipher is the work of Luis Campos and is distributed by its own syndicate. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any of them. We refer to those names only to describe the puzzles they belong to, which is how our readers describe them too.
We do not publish those puzzles and we do not publish their answers. Every puzzle and every answer on this site is our own.
5. The app, purchases and subscriptions
5.1 Free and paid parts
The app is free to download and the daily puzzle is free within it. An optional subscription, and an alternative one-time purchase, unlock the complete archive and additional features. Consumable hint packs may also be offered.
5.2 How payment works
All purchases are made through Apple's App Store and are charged to your Apple account. We never see or handle your payment details.
- Prices and terms are shown in the App Store and in the app before you confirm a purchase. Those displayed prices govern, and they may change for future billing periods with notice as required by Apple.
- Free trials, where offered, convert to a paid subscription at the end of the trial unless cancelled beforehand.
- Auto-renewal. A subscription renews automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends. Your Apple account is charged for renewal within the 24 hours before the period ends.
- Cancelling. Manage or cancel your subscription in your Apple account settings, under Subscriptions. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
- Refunds are handled by Apple under Apple's policies. We cannot issue refunds for App Store purchases ourselves, but if something has gone wrong, write to us and we will help you sort it out.
- Unused portions of a free trial are forfeited when a subscription is purchased, as Apple's terms provide.
5.3 Restoring purchases
Because there is no account, entitlements are tied to your Apple ID. Use “Restore Purchases” in the app on a new device. What is processed in order to make this work is described in our privacy policy.
6. Terms Apple requires us to include
These clauses apply to the iPhone app and are required by Apple.
- This agreement is between you and Cryptogram Press only, and not with Apple. Apple is not responsible for the app or its content.
- Your licence to use the app is a non-transferable licence to use it on any Apple-branded device that you own or control, as permitted by the App Store Terms of Service.
- Cryptogram Press, not Apple, is solely responsible for providing any maintenance and support for the app. Apple has no obligation to furnish either.
- In the event of any failure of the app to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price of the app to you. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation whatsoever with respect to the app.
- Cryptogram Press, not Apple, is responsible for addressing any claims relating to the app, including product liability claims, any claim that the app fails to conform to a legal or regulatory requirement, and claims arising under consumer protection or similar legislation.
- In the event of a third-party claim that the app infringes that party's intellectual property rights, Cryptogram Press, not Apple, is solely responsible for the investigation, defence, settlement and discharge of that claim.
- You represent that you are not located in a country subject to a US Government embargo or designated as a “terrorist supporting” country, and that you are not on any US Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- Apple and Apple's subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms as they apply to the app, and upon your acceptance Apple will have the right to enforce them against you.
7. Acceptable use
Do not attempt to interfere with the website or the app, to break their security, to overload them, or to use them to distribute anything harmful. Do not use automated tools to download the site in bulk. Normal reading, solving and printing are of course fine, as is a search engine indexing the site.
8. Accuracy of the quotations
We take the sourcing of quotations seriously and we describe our standard on the about page. We nonetheless make no warranty that every attribution is correct. Historical attribution is genuinely difficult and the scholarship changes. If you find an error and can document it, write to hello@cryptogrampress.com and we will correct it.
9. Availability
We intend to publish a new puzzle every day and to keep the archive available permanently. We cannot guarantee uninterrupted service. Websites go down, hosting providers have outages, and a one-person operation occasionally has a bad week. Nothing you have already solved is affected by an outage, and no purchase is consumed by one.
10. No warranty
The website and the app are provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, to the fullest extent permitted by law. Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
11. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Cryptogram Press will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages arising out of your use of the website or the app. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you have paid us in the twelve months before the claim arose, which for users of the free website is nothing.
Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.
12. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. When we do, the effective date at the top changes, and a material change will be noted on this page. Continuing to use the website or the app after a change means you accept the updated terms.
13. Ending your use
You can stop using the website at any time by closing it, and the app by deleting it. We may suspend access to anyone who is attacking the service or breaching section 7. Nothing else here gives us cause to cut anyone off, because there is nothing to cut off from.
14. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which Cryptogram Press is established, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules, and without depriving you of the protection of the mandatory consumer law of the country in which you live.
15. Contact
